Bring Back the Braids: Not just for little girls

I am loving the new spring/summer hairstyles featuring various braids.

I may very well be the only person who can’t braid that well though.

Thank God for Boys and Barbers because if I had girls my sister and best friend would be on hair duty.

But I am accepting the challenge of the fishtail braid because I have to try some of these looks I have been seeing.

Check out my top 5 Looks now.

Facial Freakout

So as I enjoy a wonderful Spring season and prepare for a fab Summer I realize I am having the worse breakout session on my face that I have ever experienced.

I know I am under a little bit of stress but my face is breaking out and I have all these crazy blemishes like never before.

I really thought I was pass the acne stage, but I also know I am no longer taking birth control pills which did clear up my skin for years. I am not one for much makeup and I am analyzing my diet but I think it’s time to see a dermatologist.

I am definitely one of the few people who do read the ads on the boards on the train and I saw the ad for Dr. Zizmor

For all the native New Yorkers I know you have heard of him.  I remember the commericals and I even remember when Wendy Williams use to promote his services on her radio station.  I know I am dating my age but whatever lol.

Well I thought it may not hurt to see what he had to offer seeing how I also had a friend who did use him years ago and expressed great results. He offers services for AcneEczema, plus more.

So over the next couple of weeks I will be giving you info on my progress on clearing my skin as well as more information on Dr. Zizmor and his services .

But for those of you who are interested in doing your own research on Dr. Zizmor you can call 1-800-771-6654 and you will receive a free gift by providing the code LMB2012.

This is part of a compensated campaign with Latina Mom Bloggers and Dr. Zizmor. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

DIY Thursday: Air Plant Terrarium

As we wait for other plants to bloom in Spring, you can bring your home in to bloom with an Air Plant Terrarium.

Even though I do have a green thumb and have planted all types of plants and even have grown peppers, etc. in pots on my porch, this is a perfect project for plant friendly people and those who are not.

This interesting project is in credit of Hipster Home.

Dos and Don’ts

Do use sand or small pebbles; these are good because water drains through them easily. (Wet soil will get moldy in a confined area. You don’t want this.)

Do use Tillandsia, also known as air plants; these are a great choice for terrariums because they take all the nutrients they need from the air and a small amount of water. No roots means no wet soil which means no mold. You can buy tillandsia at garden stores or online.

Do choose preserved moss instead of live moss. Preserved moss isn’t living, but it will hold moisture; this moisture raises the humidity level in the terrarium, which makes the tillandsia happy. You can find sheet moss, reindeer moss, and other preserved mosses at garden and floral stores.

Do keep your terrarium in partial sunlight.

Do give your terrarium some water. The tillandsia is alive and will need a small amount of water to stay that way. Water it by either removing it and soaking it in water once a week or, using a spray bottle, give it a small spritz of water every week or two. Pour out any excess water.

Do feel free to use little rocks, pieces of glass, or any other bits of things to help give your terrarium character.

Don’t use soil. Again, you don’t want a soupy, moldy terrarium. That would be gross.

Don’t use live moss. Moss is really picky and isn’t likely to survive well in this environment.

Don’t keep your terrarium in the dark.

Don’t keep your terrarium in full sunlight, either.

How To:

You’ll need a few tools to make a tiny terrarium but nothing complicated to get started.

Glass Vessel

Preserved sheet moss, Reindeer moss, and Tillandsia

We’ll use sand as a substrate for the terrarium.

Take a sheet of the preserved moss and put in the vessel. Tear off a pieces of reindeer moss and add this, as well.

Put a tillandsia in the vessel, pushing the smaller end in first. Position the different elements to look nice together and add more moss or rocks if you’d like. Be patient and experiment with different arrangements.

Any other found objects, like rocks, sticks, marbles, etc., would also be fun.

And voilà! You have a lovely terrarium.

On the Menu: Secret Sauce

Very rarely do I go out to eat because 1, I have kids and it makes no sense financially and 2, I really love my cooking. lol

I do find I tend to make the same things over and over.  It really doesn’t bother me because I am not bored but sometimes I would like to add a little pep in the pot.

While shopping in Whole Foods I passed the seafood department and they were giving out samples of freshly cooked fish that they were trying to promote.  On the fish they used a sauce to top it and I soon forgot about the fish.

The sauce so was delicious I had to find out where to get it immediately.

The staff member said the sauce can not only be used on fish but any other type of meat.  I was sold.

So now I have added the Schlotterbeck & Foss Rasberry Chipotle Chef Sauce to my cooking arsenal.

The label reads: Sweet meets heat in this bold blend of raspberries, apples, roasted red peppers and smoked jalapeños. BTW, the ingredients are all natural.

I love spicy food and this was a perfect mix of sweet and hot without being overwhelming.  I used it on some chicken cutlets I prepared and it was a great addition.

Their website shows that they are only sold at Whole Foods. I encourage you to go and check it out.  They have a full line of sauces, condiments, toppings and dressings. So try some secret sauce with your next home cooked meal.

Little Things You Can do to Bring Happiness

I have my good days and bad days like anyone else but how can I make my good days out number the bad?

I do little things that take my mind off stressers and I will highlight them from time to time.

One of my favorite things to do is create inspiration books on things that I find enjoyment in.

I subscribe and read tons of magazines and having all those magazines around drives my family crazy.

So in order to have some type of sanity I made a change to not keep the magazine but keep the items I really love in the magazine.

Although I live in an apartment I always dream about my house and how I would decorate it. Therefore I buy magazines that focus on design and cut out the images that I like.

I do the same with fashion and focus on the styles I like, as well as various apparel and accessories I would like to have in my closet or may someday purchase.

On those days when I just can’t be bothered with the outside world, I sit back and take some me time and look through my old books or paste my new pics into collages and enjoy.

I am sometimes surprised at how my mood changes and how relaxed I am after.

The Book I’m Reading and Listening To

iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.  What’s the point of having all these gadgets if we don’t use them to the fullest!

I took a course at the Fashion Institute of Technology and my Professor spoke to us about properly making use of our time.  He said in the morning you have the option to waste your time like sleeping on the train or listening to the newest hits on your mp3 player, or you can use that time to do things that will help you in life.

I prefer to tune out the crazies on the train, so I decided to download from iTunes and listen to something to help me in my professional life on my iPad.

I have been listening to the audio book, “How to Become CEO: The Rules for Rising to the Top of any Organization by Jeffrey J. Fox.

This book has been giving me some interesting tips like never write a nasty memo and skip all office parties when on the job.  I must say some sound a little off but it’s worth a second thought.

In order to keep things new each day on the train every other day I also read an ebook.

I have also been gearing up to redesigning my apartment so I downloaded the ebook from Barnes & Nobles for the iPad Nook App, Organized Simplicity: The Clutter-Free Approach to Intentional Living by Tsh Oxenreider.

I will admit I have some hoarding behaviors so before I redesign I have sought out assistance on how to cut the clutter before I can redesign my living space.  There are chapters for cleaning and organizing the home room-by-room, and future project ideas that will inspire you to turn your house in to a haven you’ll love.

Make use of your free time and use your new tech gadgets to spark inspiration in your life.

Pregnancy Over 30: It Isn’t the Same

I was having a discussion with my son’s father about pregnancy, body shape and the changes you experience after 30. I don’t think he really understood that age makes a big difference in outcomes.

I had my first son when I was 23 and I was a size 4. (miss those days lol. JK)

I can remember that in a blink I was pregnant, I gained only 13 pounds for my whole pregnancy, my son was born at 6lbs and my doctor said I was completely healthy.

I delivered my son after 3 pushes and jumped off the table to run to the bathroom right after. Clearly the nurses were looking at me like I was crazy but physically I was awesome.

In no time I was back in my size 4 clothes and I was a super happy mom.

My older sister gave birth to my nephew 13 months after I had my son and I noticed things weren’t the same for her. She was over 30 and being so naive I use to laugh at her moans during her pregnancy.

Life progressed and when I was about 29 I decided I was ready to have another child.  First of all it took me about a year and a half to get pregnant and my weight… I don’t even want to go there.

Physically it felt like all my joints ached and all my muscles were sore.  I was like what is going on!  I almost felt like my body wasn’t prepared to carry a baby.  To be very honest I am not a workout queen but I would have never imagined things would have been so different for me in having my second child.

Although I did lose a lot of weight after I had the baby my body was never really the same.

Most of my friends are older and we have discussed their challenges in getting pregnant after 30 and we share lots of stories about what the heck happened to our bodies.

Bottom line having a child over 30 is a huge difference then having a baby earlier in life.

Studies show that age has an influence on fertility and being older you have more of a chance to develop medical disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure or other chronic diseases, which can affect pregnancy and birth.

We already know that our bodies go through changes with age therefore, with the fact that women are choosing to have children later in life I would definitely say prepare yourself.

It is a wonderful experience so make sure you are happy and healthy when trying to conceive and just know things are not always the same as when you were in your 20’s.
